‘WWIII’ was trending on multiple social media platforms after the USA killed a top ranking Iranian general in Iraq’s capital Baghdad.

In the aftermath of the attack, people were expressing fears and worries that the recent schism between Iran and the USA could unleash a Third World War. These fears were exacerbated by news that Iran has vowed to take revenge for the murder of the country’s general.

Meanwhile, others were taking a humorous and light hearted approach to recent events in the Middle East by sharing memes and formulating various ridiculous reasons as to why they should not be drafted into the army if a Third World War does break out.

Amidst the worries, the USA has also been widely condemned for this attack which has been described as illegal by some commentators and members of the public.

Shaykh Azhar Nasser, a prominent author and lecturer, blasted the recent American offensive strategy by tweeting that the “illegal assassination is yet more proof that the U.S is never interested in peace”.

There was also widespread criticism from numerous politicians in the USA. Some of the criticism came from the Democratic Party’s leading White House contenders who criticised President Donald Trump for his highly provocative move.

Tulsi Gabbard, a Congressional member and a Presidential candidate, called on Americans to “Stand with me against Trump’s Iran War!”.

However, the most scathing criticism came from Iran, whose officials have deemed the attack as an ‘illegal’ act.
