Britain has two avenues open to it: a no-deal Brexit or Theresa May’s version of it. Never in recent history has Britain faced such dire, gloomy prospects during times of peace. A no-deal Brexit, according to experts and independent reports, would be devastating beyond imagination. Meanwhile, Theresa May’s absurd and unattainable Brexit will be slightly less devastating but still lethal to this country’s economy.
To make matters even worse, people despise the prime minister’s version of Brexit. Members of her cabinet are dissatisfied, the opposition is unhappy to say the least and some of her own Conservative colleagues simply want to use this as a reason to oust the prime minister from office. In other words, Mrs May’s Brexit will not only devastate the country but also crash her political career like an already doomed flight plan in turbulent weather. A recent YouGov poll, for instance, revealed that 42% of people think that the prime minister is ‘getting a poor Brexit deal’.
There is, however, a glimmer of hope not just for the country but also for the prime minister herself. That glimmer of shining hope are the 700,000 people who marched for a people’s vote in London. By delegating the responsibility of deciding what kind of Brexit (if any Brexit would be good for the country) to the peoplethe prime minister can save herself from making the wrong andhumiliating decision about Brexit. If she chooses to ignore the urgent plea for a people’s vote then Theresa May will surely be confined to the history books as possibly the worst premier Britain has ever had.
A people’s vote is also required because parliament and parliamentarians are horrifically incompetent to make sane and sound decisions on behalf of the electorates.
Politicians on the Labour benches are torn into multiple different factions: there are those leftist-loonies who do not have a vision of their own when it comes to Brexit; then there are Labour Remainers who do not want any kind of Brexit; and, another group of Labour politicians are simply too timid, scared and weak to stand up to their constituents to lecture them about the depressing reality of Brexit.
The Conservatives, on the other hand, are similarly divided and disunited. The government benches have people who are delusional and still obsessed about Britain’s colonial days. This faction yearns for a future that was filled with a dark, dim and bleak history. As if this group wasn’t too much of a liability already, there is a small clique around the prime minister that still believes in her version of Brexit (despite of its impracticality due to the border between the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland). The last group of politicians on these benches are in a minority but still cling on to their aim of stopping Brexit.
Meanwhile, the Liberal Democrats are, regrettably and unfortunately, a Mickey-Mouse force with no real power, no proper leader and no real strategy of how to achieve their aims within the Houses of Parliament. Although their membership rocketed upwards through the ceiling, they nonetheless constitute a non-existence inside the House of Commons.Twelve Members of Parliament at Westminster cannot in any realistic manner assert the will of their impressive party membership.
In times like these when the three main parties are incapable of delivering the best in the national interest, it should be up to the people themselves to decide their destiny.
It is thus an imperative that electorates should be given the opportunity to determine this country’s destiny in relation to Brexit because of the divisions in the House of Commons.
People can only determine the fate of their country once facts become crystal clear and the cloak of lies vanishes. That time is now. Enough time has passed, project fear is turning into project reality and the elected representatives are unable to formulate a practical path forward.
The prime minister’s Brexit plan is impractical and parliament is colossally incompetent; a people’s vote, therefore, is the only way out of this mess.
