Maahwish Mirza, who grew up in a working class family and now has an incredibly successful career in finance, has been selected as Labour’s Parliamentary candidate for Mid Bedfordshire – a development that has been welcomed by voters in the constituency.

Mid Bedfordshire is Nadine Dorries’ former seat, which she represented for 18 years until Alistair Strathern MP won it for Labour for the first time since the constituency was formed more than 100 years ago.

Alistair Strathern MP, because of boundary changes coming into effect at this General Election, will be standing in the new Hitchin constituency.

Commenting on the news that Maahwish Mirza will be standing in the new constituency, Alistair Strathern MP said: “Delighted to see Maahwish selected as Labour’s candidate for the new Mid Beds constituency”.

Yuan Yang, Labour’s parliamentary candidate for Earley and Woodley, also congratulated Labour’s Parliamentary candidate for the constituency, saying “I met Maahwish through the @LabourWomensNet Jo Cox Women in Leadership program, and am super thrilled to hear she’s standing!”

Speaking after her selection, Maahwish Mirza said in a statement to Labour East that “I will give voice to the hard-working people of this community and fight to make sure that jobs and opportunities are brought back to Mid Bedfordshire.”

Constituents, responding to the news, have expressed their delight, enthusiasm and jubilation at Maahwish Mirza’s selection, saying that Maahwish is the best person to represent Mid Bedfordshire.
