UN Tourism has designated two villages in Switzerland as Best Tourism Villages.
The announcement was made last week at an awards ceremony at the UN Tourism Executive Council in Colombia.
The villages in Switzerland that have been designated as Best Tourism Villages 2024 are Romoos and Splügen.
Fifty-five villages, including Romoos and Splügen, have been designated as Best Tourism Villages 2024. These 55 villages were chosen from an application pool of 264 villages based across 63 countries.
“The Best Tourism Villages initiative”, said UN Tourism Secretary-General Zurab Pololikashvili, “not only recognizes the remarkable achievements of these villages but also highlights the transformative power of tourism”.
The Best Tourism Village commenced in 2021 and has, since then, become an annual occurrence.
This year’s designation of two more Swiss villages as Best Tourism Villages means that Switzerland now has a total of nine villages that have received this recognition.
Winners of previous years include the villages of Andermatt, Gruyères, Morcote, Murten, Saas-Fee, Saint-Ursanne and Val Poschiavo.
“Romoos and Splügen impressed the UN Tourism jury with their strong focus on the sustainable development of local tourism and various initiatives to preserve, promote and create value from their cultural heritage”, reads a press release issued on the website of Switzerland’s government.
Having visited the beautiful village of Gruyères last year, I, for one, would really now love to visit both Romoos and Splügen very soon. How about you?
