The New European, a newspaper that was founded in the aftermath of the Brexit referendum, is celebrating its fourth birthday. The weekly pro-European publication, which was launched by Matt Kelly on 4 July 2016, is publishing its 202nd issue this week.

The newspaper’s continuing success is so remarkable that it has even defied the expectations of its founder, as the publication was expected to last for only four weeks.

The publication’s continuing existence is even more remarkable if one takes account of how badly the print industry has been impacted by the digital world, as most British newspapers’ declining circulation figures can attest to.

While the newspaper was founded as a platform for the 48% who voted to Remain in the EU, the publication has proved itself to be relevant on all other kinds of issues as well, including: the coronavirus pandemic, U.S. politics as well as on arts and culture.

The success of The New European newspaper is perhaps one of the clearest indications yet that if newspapers produce high quality, engaging, serious and expert driven content then the public is going to support them.

Another reason for its continuing prosperity may be down to the diverse set of contributors. Some of the most notable people who write for The New European newspaper include: Alastair Campbell, Bonnie Greer, Lord Adonis, Tim Walker, Yasmin Alibhai Brown and Zoe Williams.

Whatever the reasons may be for the newspaper’s success, the important thing is that it continues to exist. Its existence is vital because the publication’s fiercely pro-European agenda represents the interests of young people because most people in the younger generation voted to Remain in the European Union.
