Many countries all around the world have imposed strict lockdowns to contain and stop the spread of coronavirus. Social distancing is being imposed with the full force of the law.

However, lockdowns and curfews have created a major problem because many people can no longer work and earn their daily wages. This particular problem is much worse in countries like Pakistan, where the welfare system and social safety net is not as great as that of Europe.

This essentially means that if nothing is done then the lockdowns and curfews would lead to countless people starving to death. Imran Khan, Pakistan’s Prime Minister, did raise this pressing concern during one of his televised briefings to the nation.

Therefore, a group of young people based in Karachi, which is Pakistan’s financial capital, decided to do something about this potentially alarming situation.

A few teenagers from Karachi’s North Nazimabad district raised donations through Facebook, Instagram and Snapchat. They raised an impressive amount of money just by using social media.

To thank the donors of this highly commendable charity project, one of the organisers wrote on Facebook: ‘I want to thank everyone for your donations. With your support, we have been able to gather some rashan (food parcels) which is now to be distributed’.

According to Hasnain Haider and Romail Moiz, who are two of the key organisers, the aim of this charity project is to prevent people from starving at this incredibly difficult time.

Meanwhile, the administrators of this noble and charitable act also posted the below pictures of multiple receipts, as an act of verification that the donations are being used in the right way.

From today, they will be visiting various areas of Karachi to distribute these much needed food parcels.

As this will be an ongoing effort, the organisers have asked the public to continue their generous donations.
