Switzerland’s rail operator, SBB, and Italy’s Trenitalia will, in a collaboration, commence direct and sustainable train links from Zurich in Switzerland to Florence and Livorno in Italy.

The direct train services from Zurich to Florence and Livorno are due to commence from 2026, it has been announced by the official ‘About Switzerland’ social media account.

The prospective expansion of services, it has been said, reflects the growing number of cross-border commuters between Switzerland and Italy.

In a statement published on the SBB’s website, Véronique Stephan, the Head of the Passenger Transport Market at SBB, said: ” Together we transported around 500,000 more international travellers between the two countries in 2023 than in 2019. We have increased the number of connections to Milan and introduced new direct connections to Genoa and Bologna”.

Both sides praised the ongoing cooperation, which started in 2009 and has, since then, “transported 30 million passengers between Italy and Switzerland”, according of official figures.

Train enthusiasts, social media users, prospective holiday makers, and residents of Zurich, Florence and Livorno have expressed their excitement at this new, direct train link, stating that they can’t wait to travel on the new service.

In an Instagram poll done by ‘About Switzerland’ in their story, an overwhelming majority of respondents have said that they would like to use the daytime service to ‘admire the scenery’. Only 16% of respondents said that they would prefer to travel on the night train as opposed to 84% who said that much rather travel on the day train.

Personally, I, too, would prefer to travel on the day train because I want to experience Switzerland’s mesmerising natural landscapes again.
