Switzerland to lead OSCE in 2026: A Commitment to Dialogue and Cooperation

Switzerland has been elected to assume the presidency of the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) in 2026, marking a significant milestone in the country’s commitment to fostering international dialogue and cooperation. The announcement, made through various official channels, has been met with widespread acknowledgment of Switzerland’s role as a neutral mediator in global security challenges.

The Swiss Federal Department of Foreign Affairs expressed gratitude for the trust placed in the nation by OSCE’s participating states. “Switzerland has been elected to the presidency of the OSCE for 2026. We thank the participating States for their trust. In the face of current security challenges, [emoji for Swiss flag] reaffirms that dialogue and cooperation are essential to building sustainable solutions for our future,” read the tweet.

Similarly, the Swiss delegation to the OSCE echoed this sentiment, emphasising the importance of collaboration in addressing today’s pressing security issues. “Switzerland will chair @OSCE in 2026. In the face of today’s security challenges, [emoji for Swiss flag] reaffirms that dialogue and cooperation are essential if we are to build lasting solutions for our future,” the statement reads.

Nicolas Bideau, Head of Communication for the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs, also shared his thoughts on the achievement. Switzerland is “elected to the presidency of the OSCE for 2026. We thank the participating States for their confidence. In the face of current security challenges, [emoji for Swiss flag] reaffirms that dialogue & cooperation are essential in order to build sustainable solutions for our future,” he tweeted.

The OSCE Chair-in-Office, Ian Borg, further confirmed the announcement via @OSCE24MT, underscoring the continuity and collective effort required in such a role. “OSCE Chair-in-Office @DeputyPMIanBorg announces Switzerland’s 2026 @OSCE Chairpersonship,” the social media account posted.

Context

The OSCE, with 57 participating states, is the world’s largest regional security organisation. Its work spans areas such as conflict prevention, arms control, human rights, and democratic governance.
