Garhi Khuda Baksh, Pakistan — On the 17th anniversary of the martyrdom of Pakistan’s leader and two-time Prime Minister, Benazir Bhutto, huge waves of supporters from across the nation converged on her final resting place in Garhi Khuda Baksh. The solemn occasion was marked by an outpouring of grief, reverence, and renewed commitment to her vision for a democratic and just Pakistan.
Benazir Bhutto, the first woman to lead a Muslim-majority nation, was assassinated on December 27, 2007, during an election rally in Rawalpindi. Her legacy, defined by her relentless fight for democracy, gender equality, and social justice, continues to inspire millions.
Among those paying heartfelt tributes were her children and her husband, who have emerged as torchbearers of her mission. Aseefa Bhutto Zardari, Member of the National Assembly and First Lady of Pakistan, took to social media to express her profound grief. In a poignant tweet, she wrote:
“Another year without you, and the ache never fades. Your laughter, love, and courage are missed beyond words. But your dreams for a just, democratic #Pakistan live on in every heart you touched. We carry your legacy with pride and pain. Rest in eternal peace. #SalaamBenazir.”
The heartfelt message resonated deeply with the millions who hold Benazir Bhutto’s memory close, reflecting the enduring impact of her leadership and ideals.
Speech by Bilawal Bhutto Zardari
Addressing the gathering at Garhi Khuda Baksh, Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, Chairman of the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) and her son, spoke passionately about his mother’s historic contributions. “Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto was a representative of the weaker sections of this country, and the bravery with which Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto waged her 30-year-long political struggle has now become a golden part of history,” he said.
Supporters adorned the grounds outside mausoleum with party flags and portraits of the late leader, chanting slogans of “Jeay Bhutto” (“Long live Bhutto”) as they remembered her sacrifices. Emotional tributes and speeches highlighted her pivotal role in shaping Pakistan’s democratic journey and her unwavering commitment to the marginalised.
As Pakistan faces contemporary challenges, the legacy of Benazir Bhutto remains a beacon of hope. Her dreams for a progressive and inclusive Pakistan, championed by her children and the PPP, continue to inspire a nation striving for stability and prosperity.
This year’s commemoration served as a reminder of her extraordinary life and the principles she held dear. For the thousands gathered in Garhi Khuda Baksh and the millions watching from afar, Benazir Bhutto’s legacy is not just history—it is a living testament to the power of courage and conviction.
