Roads have been closed in London to mark the “biggest ever” Car Free Day. As part of the Car Free Day, Councils in and around London have posted maps of road closures and have invited residents to take part in the “largest ever Play Streets” events.
In a statement on their website, Transport for London has requested Londoners to “use public transport, walk or cycle” on this year’s Car Free Day.
The European Union is also encouraging citizens to participate in the Car Free Day. In a social media post, the European Union’s Climate Action group urged people to “leave the car behind & switch to cooler cleaner modes of transport”.
In addition, the European Union’s Climate Action group also said that everyone must do their “bit to help keep #OurPlanet clean green & beautiful”.
While expressing his thoughts about the Car Free Day, Sadiq Khan tweeted: “Today’s #CarFreeDay is about demonstrating our commitment to cleaning up our toxic air and experiencing a greener way of living”. He further added that “It’s also a day for families to simply have fun and play outside”.
Will Norman, the Mayor of London’s Walking and Cycling Commissioner, also expressed delight at the Sadiq Khan’s decision to close the roads. In a tweet, Will Norman posted pictures of people doing yoga on Tower Bridge and enjoying the early morning hours of Sunday.
Similar events are also being marked in other cities around the world. In Europe, for example, the European Commission, stated that: “People all over Europe are out on foot, on bike, or on public transport. These transport modes are healthy and climate-friendly. That’s why we invest in them”.
