The Labour Party fully supports a People’s Vote and would support Remaining in the EU in a public vote. After three years of relative ambivalence, Mr Corbyn expressed unequivocal support for a People’s Vote on the Prime Minister’s deal and also on the option of a possible ‘No Deal’.

If a referendum were to happen with the above options then ‘Labour would campaign for Remain’, Jeremy Corbyn tweeted today. In the same tweet, the Labour leader termed both a ‘No Deal’ and a ‘Tory deal’ as being destructive to the economy and jobs.

Campaigners for a public vote, especially those within the Labour Party, welcomed the leadership’s decision to support a pubic vote. Many Labour supporters expressed delight at Jeremy Corbyn’s decision. Remain_Labour, a group of pro-European Labour activists tweeted that “this is another step forward and a good day for all @Remain_Labour supporters”.

But members have asked the Labour Party to go even further than this and back Remaining in the EU as an unconditional promise. In their statement posted on Twitter earlier today, Remain_Labour commented that “we now need an unconditional commitment that the Labour leadership will campaign to Remain in the EU”.

However, critics were also quick to vocalise their dissatisfaction with Mr Corbyn’s decision. In a tweet, George Galloway stated that: “Jeremy Corbyn is undone. What a miserable day”.

It remains to be seen how this decision will affect Labour’s ranking in the opinion polls.
