Gina Miller, a transparency campaigner and businesswoman, has criticised the government for attempting to use her court case to justify breaking international law.
In a statement published earlier today, Mrs Gina Miller emphasised the polar opposite nature of her court case in 2017, which was about upholding Parliamentary sovereignty as set out in the constitution, and the government’s latest U-turn which is about undermining existing law and international agreement.
Part of the statement reads: ‘Miller 1 stands for the importance of the rule of law, something that this Government seems determined to undermine’.
In 2017, Mrs Gina Miller took the government to court because the prime minister at the time, Theresa May, was trying to bypass Parliament when triggering Article 50.
Both the Hight Court and subsequently the Supreme Court at the time ruled in Mrs Gina Miller’s favour, stating that Parliamentary sovereignty must be upheld and that approval of the Parliament is required prior to triggering Article 50.
The government’s latest attempt to backtrack on the Withdrawal Agreement has also received international condemnation, especially from the European Union.
For example, Ursula von der Leyen, the President of the EU Commission stated: ‘Very concerned about announcements from the British government on its intentions to breach the Withdrawal Agreement. This would break international law and undermines trust.’
