The fatality rate of ‘health and social care workers’ who have died because of COVID-19, which is commonly known as coronavirus, has increased even further. According to figures published earlier this morning, 111 ”health and social care workers’ have died because of it.
The sad passing of these hard-working and self-less individuals was announced by Nursing Notes on Twitter, a team that ‘works tirelessly to ensure their names are never forgotten’.
In the aftermath of this announcement, many individuals on social media expressed their sadness. Others also expressed their fury that many of the deaths of these hardworking health care workers could have been prevented if the lock down had been imposed earlier and if everyone key worker had access to sufficient ‘Personal Protective Equipment’ (PPE).

The “NHS may require 7.9 million sets of equipment every month” to keep their staff safe, according to the Financial Times. Keeping NHS staff is a target which the government has repeatedly failed to achieve as the lack of PPE and the rising death toll of essential workers illustrates.
This was reiterated by a survey conducted by the British Medical Association has revealed that “Half of all doctors working in high-risk areas reported shortages or no supply of long-sleeved disposable gowns and goggles”.
Keir Starmer, the Labour leader, criticised the government for their grave failings by terming the government’s response as “slow on protective equipment”.
In the meantime, to remember the ultimate sacrifice of these – and, other essential key workers – a minute’s silence will be observed ‘on Tuesday 28th April at 11AM’ throughout the UK.
