Surprise. Surprise. Another Tory MP is standing down. This time it’s none other than Chris Grayling. Well, it’s not all too surprising given how terrible the opinion polls are for the Conservatives.
However, it’s definitely timid: it reeks of weakness and cowardice that another Member of Parliament is not brave enough to defend their shambolic 13 years of government. Standing down at the next general election is like jumping off a sinking ship, leaving the country to slowly sink due to their own decade long mismanagement.
The number of Conservative MPs standing down is so high that my chances of winning the lottery outweighs the probability of any current Tory MP contesting the next General Election.
Chris Grayling MP – or, more accurately described as “Failing Grayling” – became synonymous with the very definition of failure, incompetence and wreckage. Every government job he has ever held as minister was followed by one failure after another. So many failures, in fact, that the best and brightest mathematicians lost count.
I am glad that his treatment has been successful and I wish him all the best. Depriving the people of Epsom and Ewell from voting on his shambolic record – both as an MP and a former government minister – is undemocratic, however. The public, at general elections, has the power to elect individuals and kickstart their political careers, and they should also have the power to end their careers.
To be fair to Chris Grayling, I – too – would be standing down if I had to face Gina Miller, who is contesting the next General Election in Epsom and Ewell. Gina Miller, leader of the True and Fair Party, is standing on a platform of accountability, transparency, checks and balances, and putting people and country first. Qualities and policies that are totally antithetical to the modern Conservative Party. There is no way that Chris Grayling would have won against Gina Miller. Absolutely no chance whatsoever!
In all of this, there is some silver lining though: the people of Epsom and Ewell will no longer have to deal with a part-time MP. According to the Guardian, ‘Former Conservative transport secretary Chris Grayling is one of the best-paid MPs, with a £100,000-a-year advisory role with Hutchison Ports Europe, which operates the ports of Felixstowe and Harwich and has its parent company in the Cayman Islands.’
Instead, the people of Epsom and Ewell will have the opportunity to elect an individual who is vehemently opposed to second jobs for MPs: Gina Miller. Someone who is going to be fully committed to representing the people of Epsom and Ewell in the House of Commons, whilst holding the government accountable.
Oh! And, one more thing: will the last Tory MP to stand down at the next General Election switch off the lights, please?
